What's the Difference Between Therapeutic and Relaxation Massage?

The primary difference between therapeutic and relaxation massage is the focus and intention of the treatment.

Relaxation massage generally uses soothing techniques to encourage relaxation, reduce stress, and ease general muscle tension.

Therapeutic massage takes a more targeted approach. It focuses on areas of muscular tension and trigger points (small, tight areas within muscles that can contribute to pain and discomfort). Your therapist uses specific techniques to address these areas, helping release tension and support your body's natural balance.

Because therapeutic massage works more directly with areas of tightness and tension, you may occasionally experience some discomfort during treatment. Many clients describe this sensation as the familiar "it hurts so good" feeling.

However, therapeutic massage should never feel unbearable. Communication with your therapist is important so that pressure and techniques can always be adjusted to your comfort level.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

Massage therapy can be beneficial for many people; however, certain health conditions may make massage inappropriate or require modifications to your treatment.

Please share your health history and any current concerns with your therapist before your session. If you have questions about whether massage is appropriate for you, consult with your healthcare provider.

Whether you choose therapeutic or relaxation massage, the goal is to support stress reduction, ease muscular tension, and promote overall well-being.

Your comfort is always important. If you experience any discomfort during your session, please let your therapist know so adjustments can be made to the pressure or techniques being used.

Your Body's Natural Responses

Massage encourages relaxation, and sometimes the body responds in unexpected ways. These responses are completely normal and nothing to feel embarrassed about.

You may experience:

  • Sighing, yawning, groaning, or changes in breathing.
  • Stomach gurgling or the release of intestinal gas.
  • Laughter, crying, or other emotional responses.
  • Memories, thoughts, or feelings that arise during relaxation.
  • A desire to talk, remain quiet, or change positions.

Everyone responds to massage differently. Some clients enjoy conversation, while others prefer quiet time to relax and unwind. There is no right or wrong way to experience your session.  Your comfort matters to us. At any point during your appointment, please let your therapist know if there is anything they can do to make your experience more comfortable and enjoyable.
